Play: Anastasia Krupnik
from the book by Lois Lowry
adapted by Meryl Friedman
Roles for 3 Women and 1 Man and 1
pre-teen Girl
Director is Jodi Miller
Ten-year-old Anastasia is opinionated, sassy and funny. Really funny.
Of course, she also has a funny name, but she’ll make up for it in this offbeat
story taken right from the pages of her diary. It’s about all the things
she loves—and hates—and what she plans to do about them. This memorable
story is a wonderful portrait of
childhood and family life, complete with
all its ups and downs.
Film: May 7 at 7 PM
Pride and Prejudice
The Red Barn Theater’s
film attraction -- under a new format -- for May 7 is the latest (2005) screen
version of Jane Austen’s
Pride and
Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley as
Elizabeth, the eldest of the five Bennet sisters, and Donald Sutherland as the
family patriarch.
Matthew Macfadyen excels as Mr. Darcy, the
standoffish wealthy visitor to the Bennet neighborhood who eventually becomes
Elizabeth’s
suitor.
Under the Barn’s new format for its regular Tuesday film
studies, the theater’s board members, actors and technical crew will suggest
films and host discussion.
Vicki Kavanaugh, who has acted in
many Red Barn productions, will host
Pride and Predjudice.
“I suggested this particular version because it is
very true to Jane Austen’s intent without being stuffy,” she said.
Sentimentality also played a large part in her
decision: “I like it because it was the first film for adults that I attended
with my daughter, Allison.”
Join Ms. Kavanaugh at 6:30 p.m. in front of The Big
Screen at The Red Barn,
3657 63rd St.
at
Blue Star Hwy.,
Saugatuck, about a quarter mile east of Exit 41 off of I-196.
Suggested donation is $5. Free popcorn and $1
concessions available. Call (269) 857-5300 for more information or email

Charming Family Saga SECONDHAND LIONS
The
Red Barn Theater’s film
attraction for May 21 is
Secondhand Lions
(2003), a charming coming of age tale featuring Michael Caine and Robert Duvall
as a pair of eccentric uncles who must care for their young nephew (newcomer
Haley Joel Osment) after his mother ships him out.
Host for the film and
discussion is John Huyge, Red Barn board member acting on behalf of Paul
Gunneman, who selected the film for showing.
Written and directed by
Tim McCanlies,
Secondhand Lions places young Walter in the
hands of his seemingly lunatic uncles, who through the boy learn that they can
recreate their heroic pasts.
Kyra Sedgwick is perfect as Walter’s tart of a mom
who has spent most of his life seeking a permanent man among various “uncles.”
Of course, she really wants to get her hands on
the great fortune the old men are supposed to have amassed in their various
adventures, stealing from Al Capone among them. The uncles, at first reluctant
to take Walter in, warm up to him and begin to share their story with him.

Branagh’s Brawny Version of
HENRY V
The
Red Barn Theater’s film
attraction for May 28 is the 1989 version of Shakespeare’s patriotic epic
Henry
V, adapted, directed, and starring Kenneth Branagh in the
title role. The production received immense critical praise, making the Laurence
Olivier “patriotic” version of 1944 pale by comparison.
Paul
Schofield, Derek Jacoby, Ian Holm, Emma Thompson, Alec McCowen, Judi Dench,
Robbie Coltrane, Brian Blessed, and Christian Bale lead the incredibly
accomplished supporting cast.
The
play was Shakespeare’s coda to
Henry IV, parts One and
Two, which introduced the young crown prince and his dissolute drinking
companions Falstaff, Bardolph, Nym and Pistol. That play started the prince on
his way to adult responsibility.
In
Henry V,
arrives
as his own man, leading the English army in an invasion of France
to recapture lost territory.
Andrew
Plummer, a Red Barn acting stalwart, selected the film for showing and
discussion.
Join
Mr. Plummer at 6:30 p.m. in front of The Big Screen at The Red Barn, 3657 63rd

Red Barn Theater’s film
series continues a month of fantasy classics with 1958’s
The 7th Voyage of Sinbad

Mrs. Bing Crosby) as she and Sinbad (Mathews) are traveling to their wedding in
Baghdad. Sinbad swings into action with the aid of a boy genie (Eyer).

Red Barn Fantasy Film:
Clash of the Titans
The
Red Barn Theater’s film
series continues a month of fantasy classics with 1981’s

The
story is well recounted in Greek mythology. Perseus (Harry Hamlin) must battle

Fantasy
Film Series Finale: Forbidden Planet
The
Red Barn Theater’s film
series winds up a month of fantasy classics with 1956’s
Forbidden Planet
on June 25.
Starring the very serious Walter Pidgeon as Doctor
Morbius, the statuesque Anne Francis as his daughter Alta, and Leslie Nielsen
(he plays it straight in this one) as Commander Adams, this film is famous for
bringing to the screen Robby the Robot, with his keen eye for “danger!”
Commander
Adams and his crew arrive at a planet where a scientific mission had landed 20
years previously.
They find that all but two humans have died:
Doctor Morbius and his daughter,
only survivors of an onslaught by a monster that
roams the planet.
What’s more, Morbius has discovered that a race of
geniuses had inhabited the planet and disappeared, leaving behind technology
that humans can barely comprehend.
